How long does an electrical panel last?

InterNACHI's baseline chart puts a residential service panel at about 60 years. The warranty paper inside the same box runs ten: Square D covers a Homeline load center for ten years from installation, and covers its QO panels and breakers for what it calls the lifetime of the load center — the box being the very thing that is supposed to last.

Typical service life: about 60 years

The baseline chart carries a single 60-year figure for a service panel; it is a flat estimate for the category, not a reading of any particular box. Panels in damp basements, in coastal air, or on services that have been added to for decades sit below it. The other common baseline, NAHB's 2007 survey chart, has no service-panel line at all — its electrical section stops at wiring, accessories and lighting controls.

Damp is the variable that moves this number. A panel in a dry interior closet can pass the chart's 60 years without anything happening to it at all; the same panel on a below-grade wall that sweats every summer, or within reach of coastal air, is on a different schedule — which is why inspection literature treats rust on the cabinet as a finding about the last twenty years rather than about today.

What the warranty paper actually says

Square D (Schneider Electric) (Homeline and QO residential load centers and circuit breakers) publishes a 10-year limited, conditional warranty. The ten years belong to a Homeline single-phase load center or combination service entrance device, counted from the date of installation. QO load centers and Square D branch circuit breakers get a different term entirely: the paper warrants them "for the lifetime of the load center in which it is installed", which makes the box its own clock. Either way the remedy is a repaired or replaced part returned to the place of purchase, and the document says outright that it does not include costs or reimbursement for labor — the electrician who takes the old one out is never covered. Eaton's residential paper reads the same way from the other side: its type BR load centers and breakers expire ten years after the manufacturing date code stamped on the device rather than the day it was installed, while type CH panels and thermomagnetic breakers run "for the life of the product", with the electronic arc-fault and ground-fault breakers cut back to ten years from manufacture. Eaton's term reaches the first buyer of the house after installation and stops there.

What shortens it

  • Moisture reaching the cabinet — condensation dripping off a cold water line above it, or a foundation wall that sweats behind it
  • Coastal and humid air, which corrodes plated bus bars and makes every connection inside less reliable
  • A service that has been added to over and over, since every added circuit is another connection working inside the same enclosure
  • Heat cycling on circuits run near their rating for long stretches, which relaxes connections slowly over years
  • Rodents, which chew wire insulation inside enclosures and are a standing item on inspectors' checklists
  • Obstruction — storage stacked against the panel, which is both a code clearance problem and the reason nobody looks at it for twenty years

Signs of wear to look for

  • The cover or door warm to the back of a hand at a time when the house is not drawing much power
  • Lights dimming or flickering across several rooms at once, rather than at one fixture
  • One breaker that trips again and again on the same circuit, or trips that need resetting far more often than they used to
  • Rust, staining or blistered paint on the cabinet, or a water track down the wall above it — inspectors read rust as evidence of wet conditions that may still exist
  • A buzzing, crackling or popping sound at the cabinet, or a hot-plastic smell near it
  • Scorch marks or heat discoloration at the edge of the cover or on the wall around it

Nothing on this page is a way to judge a panel from outside it. InterNACHI's own guidance to its inspectors is to tell the homeowner never to remove the panel cover themselves, and the same article lists panels made by Zinsco or Federal Pacific Electric (FPE, Stab-Lok) as a documented topic that gets referred to a qualified electrician for further evaluation — identified by the label inside, never by symptoms in a room. Anything you can see, hear or smell at an electrical service — heat, arcing sounds, scorching, water — that is an inspection question, not a web-page question.
