How long does a fire extinguisher last?

Two different objects are sold under the same name, and they age nothing alike. A rechargeable extinguisher is a pressure vessel on a service cycle: NFPA 10 puts a teardown at six years and a hydrostatic test at twelve, and a cylinder that passes goes back on the wall. A disposable one has no cycle at all — Amerex's manual says its non-rechargeable models "shall be removed from service 12 years from the date of manufacture on the UL nameplate," and First Alert's disposable manual is blunter still: do not service or repair it under any circumstances. Amerex's warranty is six years, and it is written around a seal that the first required service breaks.

Amerex's owner's service manual reproduces the cycle NFPA 10 sets: under the heading "COMPLETE MAINTENANCE — SIX YEAR TEARDOWN [NFPA-10]," it states that "Every six years, stored pressure extinguishers that require a 12 year hydrostatic test shall be emptied and subjected to the applicable maintenance procedures," and separately that the cylinder "must be hydrostatically tested every 12 years to the test pressure indicated on the nameplate." Twelve years is where a non-rechargeable extinguisher stops for good; for a rechargeable one it is only the first test. The 24 here bounds the drawing rather than the claim — no maker publishes a retirement age for a cylinder that keeps passing. None of this outranks the gauge: a needle outside the green band ends an extinguisher's service that day, at any age.

Where an extinguisher hangs decides most of this. Amerex rates its ABC dry chemical units from -65°F to 120°F, but the practical enemy is damp: an unheated garage, a boat locker or a coastal shed puts moisture against a steel pressure vessel year-round, and corrosion is the failure mode the warranty specifically declines to cover. A kitchen or hallway unit in conditioned air will normally reach its twelve-year mark on looks alone.

What the warranty paper actually says

Amerex Corporation (Limited Warranty for Goods (portable fire extinguishers)) publishes a 6-year limited, conditional warranty. Six years from date of purchase, against defects in material and workmanship under conditions of normal use — and the conditions are the whole story. Amerex will not be responsible for repairs where the original gray lockwire seal is not intact and/or parts other than factory parts have been used to service the extinguisher, which is a narrow doorway for a device whose first required teardown falls in year six. Normal wear and tear, erosion or corrosion, and improper storage, use or maintenance are excluded outright, as is any part made by someone else. Amerex owes no labor, removal or installation charges, and a claim is treated as waived unless it is put in writing within ten calendar days of the day the buyer discovered, or should have discovered, the problem. Other Amerex lines run to their own terms: five years on CO2 and water-based extinguishers, twelve on high-performance models.

What shortens it

  • Corrosion and erosion, which Amerex's warranty excludes by name; a cylinder showing pitting, dents or weld damage has to be pressure-tested before it goes back into service at all
  • Damp, unheated or salt-air storage, which works on the shell from outside while the dry chemical packs down inside — the agent and the expelling means are exactly what NFPA 10's six-year teardown exists to check
  • Any discharge at all, including a one-second squeeze to "test" it: First Alert's disposable manual warns in capitals not to check the pressure by squeezing the trigger, because once used the extinguisher will gradually lose pressure
  • Substitute parts — Amerex states that use of substitute parts releases it of its warranty obligations, and that such parts void the UL listing as well
  • Buying disposable in the first place: a non-rechargeable unit cannot be serviced, so a slow pressure loss at year four is the end of it rather than a recharge
  • Mounting where it gets knocked, painted over or stacked behind stored goods, so the monthly gauge check quietly stops happening
  • Temperature extremes outside the rated band — Amerex's ABC data sheet gives -65°F to 120°F, and First Alert warns never to expose a unit to temperatures over 150°F even when fully discharged

Signs of wear to look for

  • A pressure gauge needle outside the green band, high or low — the one check the manuals ask an owner to make monthly
  • A broken or missing tamper seal or pull pin, meaning the handle has been squeezed at some point
  • Corrosion, pitting, dents or abrasion on the cylinder, particularly at the base and around welds
  • A hose gone hard or cracked, or a nozzle blocked with set agent
  • A nameplate manufacture date more than twelve years back — the point at which a non-rechargeable unit is retired outright and a rechargeable one is due its hydrostatic test
  • An inspection tag with no entry in the past year, against a manual that asks for maintenance at least annually
  • A unit noticeably lighter than the weight printed in the maintenance block on its own label

Whether a particular extinguisher is still fit for service — whether the cylinder passes its test, whether the six-year and twelve-year work has been done, whether its size and rating suit the hazard it is hanging next to — is not settled by looking at it. NFPA's own guidance is that an extinguisher is one element of a fire response plan and the primary element is safe escape. Take the rest to the fire service or a qualified inspector: that is an inspection question, not a web-page question.
