How long do copper gutters last?

InterNACHI's baseline chart puts copper gutters at 50+ years and copper downspouts at 100. There is no warranty bar here, for the same reason there is none on a copper roof: architectural copper is sold as bare commodity sheet, and the only warranty the trade's own specification asks anyone for is two years of the installer's workmanship.

The chart's line for "Copper Gutters" is "50+" and its line for "Copper Downspouts" is 100 — the same metal, the difference being that a gutter holds standing water and debris and a downspout does not. The 100 here bounds the drawing at the chart's own downspout figure; the plus sign on the gutter line carries no ceiling.

Copper's number barely moves with climate; what moves is how quickly the patina arrives — a few years in coastal air, decades in dry inland air — and neither is a durability problem. Acid rain regions consume the sheet's sacrificial thickness measurably faster, which matters at the 16-ounce weight the specification calls for on hung gutters and much less at the 20-ounce weight it calls for on built-in work.

What shortens it

  • Concentrated runoff from an upper roof landing in one spot, which erodes copper measurably across decades
  • Solder joints and seams, which are craft rather than metal, and where a copper gutter almost always goes first
  • Contact with aluminum, galvanized steel or their fasteners, which corrodes the lesser metal and stains everything below
  • Acidic runoff from cedar shakes or a moss-covered roof above, which spends the sheet's sacrificial thickness faster
  • Long runs detailed without expansion joints, which fatigues seams and works hangers loose as the metal moves
  • Debris left to sit — copper tolerates weather far better than it tolerates a trough that never dries out

Signs of wear to look for

  • Green patina is not a symptom — it is the protective surface doing its job
  • Solder joints opening at miters and outlets, showing as a steady drip line on the wall below
  • Pinholing or visible thinning under a valley, or under a downspout discharging from a roof above
  • Split seams and popped hangers along long straight runs
  • Bright streaking on masonry or siding below the gutter, tracing runoff that has found a new path
  • Dents and hard creases from ladders, which break solder joints even where the sheet itself survives

A built-in or lined gutter set into the cornice is part of the roof structure, and a leak there runs into framing rather than down the face of a wall — that is an inspection question, not a web-page question.
