How long does an ipe deck last?
The USDA Forest Products Laboratory records ipe heartwood as very resistant to attack by decay fungi and termites — the top of the durability scale, where the standard band begins at more than 25 years of resisting decay in the ground and a deck surface sits above the ground. There is no warranty bar on this page: ipe reaches the yard as commodity tropical hardwood, and the importers who mill it publish no consumer term.

Typical service life: 25+ years
The "more than 25 years" floor is the top durability class in the American Hardwood Export Council's technical note, and it measures how long heartwood resists decay in soil — stakes half-buried in the ground, not deck boards. The note's own examples of that class are teak and ekki; ipe's place in it rests on the USDA Forest Products Laboratory's species sheet, which records the heartwood as very resistant to decay fungi and termites. A ventilated walking surface outlives a buried stake, so 25 is a floor and the 50 here only bounds the drawing.

Ipe is dense enough that decay is rarely what ends an ipe deck; movement is. The wood takes on and gives up moisture slowly but forcefully, so climates with hard seasonal swings — a wet winter and a baking summer — work the boards against their fixings year after year and show up as checking, cupping and lifted plugs long before anything is soft. In steady coastal air the same deck mostly just goes grey.
Why there is no warranty bar here
Ipe is commodity tropical hardwood, milled and shipped by importers rather than made by a manufacturer, and none of them publishes a homeowner warranty on it. Its record lives in species literature and in public boardwalks that have carried crowds and service vehicles for decades, not in a document anyone will honour. What varies between one ipe deck and another is not a brand but the wood itself: density, the share of true heartwood, and how the boards were dried before they went down.
What shortens it
- Sapwood in the pack — the pale outer wood carries none of the heartwood's resistance and is the first thing to go soft
- Boards installed before they have acclimatised, on a wood that shrinks hard and pulls against its own fasteners
- Cut ends and screw holes left unsealed, which check and split in a wood far too dense to absorb a repair
- Poor airflow beneath the deck, which keeps the underside wetter than the top and drives cupping
- Iron fasteners, which corrode fast against ipe's extractives and leave black bleed around every fixing
Signs of wear to look for
- Boards weathering from olive brown to a hard silver-grey, which is the surface only and not decay
- End checks opening at the board ends and running back along the grain
- Cupping across the width of boards, usually where the underside stays damper than the top
- Black staining and bleed spreading around fasteners and hardware
- Fasteners standing proud or the plugs lifting as boards move seasonally against a very stiff, very dense wood
Ipe is heavy, and a frame sized for lighter decking is carrying more than it was drawn for: whether the joists, beams and footings under it are adequate is structure — that is an inspection question, not a web-page question.
