How long does a chain-link fence last?
A chain-link fence is zinc wrapped around steel wire, and its clock is the zinc. The galvanizing industry marks the end of a zinc coating at 5% red rust on the steel underneath — and so does the fence maker's warranty, which puts that moment at 12 years, a long way short of where the same threshold falls on the coating chart.

Read off the American Galvanizers Association's time-to-first-maintenance chart at the zinc weights chain-link fabric actually carries. The association's threshold is 5% rusting of the steel surface, its relationship between coating thickness and years is linear, and its own conversion is printed on the chart: 1 mil of zinc = 0.56 oz/ft². ASTM A392 sets Class 1 chain-link fabric at 1.2 oz/ft², about 2.1 mils, where the five environment lines run from roughly 40 years in industrial air to about 70 in rural air; at the chart's thinnest plotted coating, 1.0 mil, the same lines fall to about 20 and 32. Two things push real fences toward the bottom of that spread. Fabric is galvanized as wire and then woven and cut, and the association notes that fabrication after coating leaves uncoated areas the surrounding zinc has to cover on its own. And first red rust is where a chain-link fence begins to look finished, not where it falls down — the association is explicit that time to first maintenance is not the same thing as service life.

The coating chart is really a climate chart. At the same zinc thickness, the line for rural air reaches first rust around 70 years while the line for industrial air is down near 40, with coastal sites between them. That spread is why the fence maker's own warranty stops at the coast rather than shortening there — harsh industrial, coastal and marine environments are written out of the 12-year term entirely.
What the warranty paper actually says
Master Halco (12 Year Limited Warranty — Galvanized Chain-Link Fence System) publishes a 12-year limited, non-transferable, conditional warranty. The 12 years cover defects in material and workmanship and "the development of red rust over five percent (5%) of the surface" — the same 5% threshold the galvanizing industry uses to mark when a zinc coating has reached its first maintenance. It only applies to a fence built entirely of that maker's components and meeting the specifications the paper names: fabric at 11½ gauge or heavier to ASTM A392, terminal and line posts at 16 gauge or heavier, top rail at 17 gauge or heavier, installed to ASTM F567. It runs to the original purchaser and not to any subsequent owner, and it pays for components only — no labor to fit them, no delivery, no tax. Harsh industrial, coastal and marine environments are not warranted at all.

What shortens it
- Salt air and industrial atmospheres, where the coating chart reaches first rust around 40 years at the same zinc thickness that lasts about 70 in rural air — and which the warranty excludes outright rather than shortening
- Cut ends and knuckled selvage, where weaving and cutting leave bare steel that the zinc around it has to protect on its own
- The bottom of the fabric sitting in soil, mulch or standing water instead of clear of grade
- Aluminum tie wires and mixed-metal hardware at posts and rails, which set up corrosion at every tie
- Impact that bends the fabric and cracks the coating — vehicles, mower decks, a dog working at one low corner
Signs of wear to look for
- Orange staining at the knuckles and cut ends first, spreading along the wire from there
- A rust line along the bottom of the fabric where it has been sitting in soil or mulch
- Fabric sagging between posts and no longer springing back when it is pushed
- Rust bleeding out of the top rail at the couplings, which drain poorly and hold water inside the pipe
- Tie wires broken or missing, leaving the fabric loose along a whole run
