How long does a well pump last?

The baseline chart gives a well pump about 15 years. Franklin Electric, whose motors sit inside a large share of North American submersibles, publishes one year from the date of installation and in no event more than two years from the date of manufacture — so a pump that spent a year on a distributor's shelf can be fitted with most of its term already gone.

The baseline chart carries a single 15-year figure for well pumps. The Water Systems Council's own guidance points straight at the variable behind it: most wear and tear on a well pump happens when it stops and starts, and a larger storage tank prolongs pump life because it cuts the number of cycles. A pump on an undersized tank in a heavy-use household is spending itself much faster than a flat figure suggests.

The submersible itself sits below the frost line and barely knows what the weather is doing; it is the above-ground equipment in unheated well houses that freezes. What varies by region is water chemistry — sand, iron and hardness are a far bigger lever on how long a well pump lasts than the thermometer is.

What the warranty paper actually says

Franklin Electric (North American standard limited warranty (M1571), covering submersible pumps and motors) publishes a 1-year limited, non-transferable, conditional warranty. One year from the date of installation, but in no event more than two years from the date of manufacture — whichever expires first, which means shelf time comes out of the owner's term. The warranty extends only to product bought directly from Franklin; anything bought elsewhere is covered only if a Franklin Certified Installer put it in. It is expressly not assignable or transferable to any later purchaser or user, so it does not survive a house sale. The remedy is capped at repair, replacement or the price paid to Franklin for the part. Longer coverage exists only as a separately issued extended warranty.

What shortens it

  • Frequent starts and stops — the trade guidance names this as where most of a well pump's wear happens, and an undersized pressure tank is the usual cause
  • Sand and silt in the water, which abrade impellers, seals and the bore of the pump
  • A falling water level that lets the pump break suction and run dry
  • Supply voltage running low or swinging, which heats the motor windings on every start
  • Starting torque with no torque arrestor fitted, which lets the pump swing and chafe the drop cable against the casing over the years
  • Lightning and switching surges reaching the motor through that same drop cable

Signs of wear to look for

  • Air spitting and sputtering at taps, most noticeably at the first fixture opened in the morning
  • Pressure sagging when two fixtures run together and recovering only slowly afterwards
  • The pump taking much longer than it used to to reach its cut-off pressure
  • Sand or grit turning up in aerators, toilet tanks and filter housings
  • The breaker tripping on start, or a motor that hums without starting
  • Water arriving cloudy or silty after a heavy draw and clearing later

Whether the well itself is losing yield, and whether the casing, cap and pitless adapter are still sound, are questions about what is underground — that is an inspection question, not a web-page question.
