How long does aluminum siding last?
InterNACHI's baseline chart gives aluminum siding 25 to 40+ years, and most of the aluminum on American houses is past the top of that range already — it was the standard cladding from the 1940s until vinyl took the market in the 1970s. There is no warranty bar on this page for an honest reason: the terms that came with this siding ran out decades ago, in many cases along with the companies that wrote them.

Typical service life: 25+ years
The chart's entry is "25 to 40+", carrying the plus mark, on a chart with no date of its own. Aluminum rarely fails structurally — it does not rot, burn, or feed insects — so what ends it is nearly always the finish and the dents rather than the metal, which is why so much of it is still on the wall well past the top of the range and looking every year of it.

Coastal exposure is the deciding variable: salt takes the finish off aluminum faster than sun does, and cut edges bloom first. Inland, aluminum simply chalks and fades along a long slow curve, which is why so many 1960s walls are still weathertight while looking thoroughly spent.
Why there is no warranty bar here
Aluminum siding is a legacy cladding. The great majority of it went up between the 1940s and the 1970s, and whatever limited term came with it expired long ago — in many cases so did the manufacturer. It is still rolled today in small volumes, largely for repairs, matching, and fire-exposed assemblies, but there is no current, widely published homeowner warranty for aluminum lap siding to set beside the vinyl and fiber cement terms on these pages. Aluminum on a wall today is almost certainly out of warranty on age alone.
What shortens it
- Salt air, which pits and blooms the finish and works into every cut edge and fastener line
- Hail and everyday knocks, because the panels take a permanent dent and never spring back
- Chalking of the baked-on enamel under sustained UV, which is the ordinary end of the finish rather than a defect
- Contact with dissimilar metals — copper drip edges and steel fasteners set up corrosion right at the joint
- Scratches through the coating that expose bare aluminum and let oxidation creep along under the paint
Signs of wear to look for
- Heavy chalk on a rag wiped down the wall, and finish that transfers onto a hand
- Uneven fading between walls, with darker rectangles where an awning or an addition once shaded the panels
- Dents, creases and ripples across the courses, concentrated at ground-reachable height
- White powdery oxidation and pitting at cut edges, corners and nail lines
- Loose or rattling panels where the nailing hem has torn or fatigued
Aluminum siding is a conductive metal skin wrapped around a house, so whether it is properly bonded, and what the panels were installed over, touch electrical service and structure both — that is an inspection question, not a web-page question.
