How long does a concrete driveway last?
The Portland Cement Association's figure for concrete pavement is an average service life of 30 to 50 years — the longest of any common driveway surface, and roughly twice what asphalt gets. There is still no warranty bar here. Ready-mixed concrete is sold by the cubic yard against a strength specification; the slab in front of your garage is the finisher's work, and a workmanship guarantee measured in a year or two is the only paper that follows it home.

PCA's line is "Long life — concrete pavements have an average service life of 30 to 50 years," and it is written for concrete pavements as a class; the same sheet lists residential and city streets among the uses. A driveway carries a fraction of a street's loads, which pushes it toward the top; it is also usually thinner, unreinforced, and jointed by whoever poured it, and it takes de-icing salt at the same rate a road does. The baseline charts sit inside the range rather than arguing with it — InterNACHI's nearest entry, concrete walks, is 40 to 50 years.

Concrete's climate story is a chemistry story. Where it freezes, water in the pores expands, and the defense against that is the microscopic air bubbles deliberately mixed in before the pour — air-entrained concrete survives cycles that destroy the same mix without them. De-icing salts make it worse twice over, by pulling more water into the surface and by cycling it more often, which is why visible damage on a northern driveway is nearly always scaling along the salt-carrying edges rather than cracking in the middle. In a frost-free climate the same slab mostly just ages, and the top of PCA's range is realistic.
Why there is no warranty bar here
A concrete driveway has no manufacturer, because it is not manufactured anywhere except on your driveway. The ready-mix plant sells a cubic yard of plastic concrete against a strength specification and its responsibility ends when the truck's chute is washed out. Everything that decides whether the slab reaches thirty years or ten happens on site: the subgrade, the thickness, the air content ordered for freeze-thaw exposure, when the joints were sawn, whether water was worked into the surface during finishing, and how it was cured. So the only paper is the concrete contractor's own workmanship guarantee — written by that contractor, usually a year or two, and usually excluding cracking outright, since plain concrete is expected to crack somewhere, which is why it is sawn into panels in the first place.
What shortens it
- De-icing salts, and especially the harsher chlorides, which drive surface scaling on concrete that was not air-entrained for the exposure
- The first winter: a slab de-iced before the concrete has matured through a season scales far more readily than the same slab a year later
- Water worked into the surface during finishing, or troweling started over bleed water — both leave a weak top layer that flakes off years later
- Joints sawn late, spaced too far apart, or left out, which lets the slab choose its own crack lines
- A subgrade that settles or washes out: voids under a rigid slab are what turn a hairline crack into a stepped one
- Tree roots and heavy point loads — concrete fails brittle, so a load it cannot bridge cracks it rather than dimpling it
Signs of wear to look for
- Flaking and peeling of the top skin, worst near the garage door and along the road edge where salt collects (scaling)
- Panels that no longer meet flush — one side of a crack or joint sitting proud of the other (faulting)
- Popouts: small conical craters where an unsound aggregate particle has burst near the surface
- A crack that has opened wide enough to hold grit and now stays damp long after the rest of the slab has dried
- A hollow sound under a tapped edge, or a panel that rocks underfoot, which points at a void in the ground rather than at the concrete
- White crystalline bloom after wet weather (efflorescence), which is water travelling through the slab rather than around it
A driveway slab that has dropped or tilted toward the house, or a crack that carries on into a garage floor or a foundation wall, is a question about the ground and the structure rather than about the concrete — that is an inspection question, not a web-page question.
