How long does a paver driveway last?

This is the one driveway in the family with a real manufacturer's warranty on it, and reading that warranty carefully is the whole story. ICPI's design figure for interlocking concrete pavement is 20 to 40 years, and Belgard warrants its pavers for the lifetime of the product, transferable to the next owner. But the term is on the units, not on the pavement: the same document voids itself if the installation did not follow the association's guidelines, excludes replacement labor, and points at a contractor who guarantees workmanship for a minimum of three years. The stone is covered for life. The driveway is covered for three years.

The gap: the paper says “Lifetime” — The term covers one thing: that the pavers meet or exceed ASTM C-936, warranted "for the lifetime of the Product defined by ICPI," with units that fail the specification replaced at no charge. It expressly does not apply to "splitting, chipping or other breakage that could be caused by impact, abrasion or overloading," and Belgard "will not be responsible for any replacement labor, consequential damages or incidental damages" — the pavers arrive free, the lifting and relaying does not. It is void unless the job was installed under CMHA or Belgard guidelines, it is residential-only, transfer requires the original proof of purchase, and color matching on replacements is not guaranteed. Belgard's own recommendation on the same page is a contractor from its program "who guarantees their workmanship for a minimum of 3 years from the date of install" — which is the actual term on the installation. The ICPI Tech Spec's phrasing is that "the period of time, or design life, is 20 to 40 years," and it defines design life as the period before damage requires major rehabilitation, often complete removal and replacement. The pavers themselves rarely set that limit: they are high-strength units with no monolithic slab to crack, and the same body's application guide notes that repairs to the base can be reached "by removing and later reinstating the same pavers." Bedding sand, joint sand, edge restraint and base are what decide where in the range a particular drive lands.

Freeze-thaw is a large part of why this pavement exists in cold climates. Because it is many small units on a flexible aggregate base rather than one slab, it moves with the ground instead of cracking against it, and a heaved section can be lifted and relaid over a repaired base without a saw. What the cycle does attack is the joint: water gets in where the sand has gone, freezes, and works units loose. Salt is the other cold-climate variable, and it acts on the concrete faces of the units rather than on the structure underneath them.

What shortens it

  • The base and the bedding layer, which are what actually fail — the units sit on them and follow them down
  • Edge restraint letting go: without it the field spreads at the perimeter, joints open, and interlock is lost
  • Joint sand washed out by pressure washing or concentrated runoff, which is how the pavement loses its ability to share a wheel load between units
  • Weeds, ants and freeze-thaw working in open joints once the sand has gone
  • Snow plow blades that catch a lip and lift units, and wheels turned while standing still
  • Mortared joints, which the ICPI application guide says belong in pedestrian areas in non-freeze-thaw climates only and carry a high risk of deterioration under vehicles

Signs of wear to look for

  • Ruts or dishing along the wheel tracks with the pavers themselves intact — a base or bedding problem showing at the surface
  • Joints standing open and empty, with sand visibly gone from the top of the joint
  • Units rocking underfoot, or ringing hollow when tapped
  • The field creeping outward at the edges, with the pattern pulling apart along the border course
  • Individual pavers chipped at the corners or split across, usually where a plow blade or a dropped load found them
  • White bloom on the paver faces in the first year or two (efflorescence), which the manufacturers treat as normal curing rather than a defect
