How long does a copper roof last?

The roofing industry's own field guide says properly installed copper roof systems can last well over 100 years — domes from 1912 are still in service. Copper tolerates nearly every climate; what varies is patina speed — years in coastal air, decades in dry inland air. Acid rain regions consume sacrificial thickness measurably faster, which matters at 16-oz weights and barely at 20-oz.

What shortens it

  • Erosion at drip points — concentrated runoff from an upper roof can wear through copper over decades
  • Contact with incompatible metals (bare steel, aluminum) causing galvanic attack on the lesser metal and staining
  • Acidic runoff from cedar or moss-covered surfaces above the copper
  • Fatigue at seams and cleats where thermal movement was not detailed for
  • Foot traffic denting flat-seam work and breaking soldered joints

Signs of wear to look for

  • Green patina is not a symptom — it is the protective surface doing its job
  • Pinholing or visible thinning where water concentrates below valleys and scuppers
  • Split or fatigued standing seams and popped cleats
  • Solder joints opening at flat-lock panels and built-in gutters
  • Streaking on facades below, which signals runoff chemistry worth tracing
